OUR 1 DAY BOAT LICENCE CONSISTS OF THEORY, PRACTICAL AND THEORY EXAM

Maritime Training School offer the boat license course in Sydney, Canberra, Central Coast and Northern NSW. Our qualified trainers will ensure you have a fun day out on the water. The boat licence course is designed for both the experienced and the newcomer, even young adults are catered for! Enrol online or over the phone today!

Get your licence in a few easy steps on our full day licence course that can include boat theory, practical and exam and PWC in the 1 day (for most locations). Note: the 50 boat licence questions is comprised of 2 sections. One section is 20 questions involving navigation, distance off regulations and other critical safety questions. You must score 20/20 in this section. The second section comprises of 30 questions which you must score a minimum of 24/30. If you meet these requirements you pass the course. If you fail, you get another attempt on the day. Don’t despair if you fail this attempt too. You get 2 attempts per day at no extra cost to you.

1) Complete Theory in a class room and 50 questionnaire online exam (boat licence) and 15 questionnaire exam (PWC if you are doing the PWC licence course). *PWC commonly known as jetski.

2) Complete practical boat training (boat licence only  -no log book required)

3) Receive an application form from us after passing your theory exam on the day with theory and practical tasks signed off by our trainers. Note: PWC practical is not required. ( For PWC bring 2 passport photos to class for the application form ).

4) Take the application form(s) to Service NSW or Department of Transport Office (formerly known as RMS) and pay their nominated fees.

5) Receive an interim licence until a card is mailed  to you by TfNSW.  Note: you may request to combine car and boat /PWC licence in NSW.

NSW Boat Licence Course

NSW Boat licence courses provided at the Maritime Training School’s many locations, have qualified trainers who will provide everything you need in our popular one-day NSW Boat Licence course – and you get a great day out on the water at the same time. There are 2 ways to get your boat Licence 1) Complete the theory, boat practical training and theory exam. NO log book required. One stop shop! We will provide you with your application form to take to the TfNSW who will issue you with your licence. Why not get an upgrade of PWC licence on the same day. Just add the PWC course to your boat licence online enrolment / registration. OR (Location dependent) 2) Complete the theory, Exam and take a practical log book to be completed by an experienced skipper of 3 years or more

Learn the theory part of the course

Pass the theory exam (50 mulitple questions).

We will then give you the boat licence application form.

Obtain your practical log book from us or from any TfNSW office. 

 – Go on 3 separate boat trips with an experienced skipper of more than 3 years experience who will coach and train you and who will complete the log book

Take your completed log book with your application form that we provided you in class to a RMS or Service NSW to get your licence

You can also add PWC to your course registration and complete both theory and exam courses on the same day. (Practical is not required for PWC).

Boat Licence Theory, Boat Practical Tuition and Theory Exam

Sydney one day boat licence courses consists of theory, practical boat training and theory exam (50 multiple choice questions). You must pass the exam in order to receive an application form. Take this form to Service NSW or Transport for NSW and they will provide you with a boat licence for a small fee of approximately $62 for one year. There is no requirement for a practical log book as this is completed on the day with our Regulatory approved school. 

 

Boat Licence Courses In Mosman, Rose Bay, Cabarita, Sans Souci, Central Coast, Canberra and Northern NSW

Cabarita

Maritime Training School caters for all boaters out there in the Western Suburbs. We will pick you up at 8.00am at d’Albora Marinas Cabarita and run you over to our waterfront training room at Mosman. We will return you to Cabarita at the end of the training day. If you would like to attend the PWC course as well, please select the Mosman PWC Course.

Mosman

The course is held in Mosman Bay at the 3rd Sea Scout Hall Mosman in a class room setting,  starting at 9am, finishing at approximately 3.30pm. Live in the east or the west? We have pick-up points in Rose Bay (8:30am) and Cabarita (8:00am) where we can pick you up at and drop you back after the course has finished around 4:00pm. The course consists of theory, practical boat training and theory exam. No practical log book required. You can then take your application form to Transport For NSW or Service NSW to obtain your licence.

Rose Bay

We can pick you up at 8.30am at the Rose Bay boat ramp, take you to Mosman for the training and return you to Rose Bay after the course! If you would like to attend the PWC course as well, please select the Mosman PWC Course

Sans Souci

A classroom setting at St George Motor Boat Club starting at 9:00am, finishing at approximately 3:30pm. The course consists of theory, practical boat training and theory exam. No practical log book required. The practical training is done at the marina of the club. You can then take your application form to Transport For NSW or Service NSW to obtain your licence.

Central Coast

One day Theory,  Exam and Practical 

A classroom setting at Gosford District Scout Hall, starting at 8:30am, finishing at approximately 3:30pm. The course consists of theory, practical boat training and theory exam . Once you pass your exam, you can then take your application form to Transport For NSW or Service NSW to obtain your licence.

Canberra (Act)

You have a choice of 2 options

Option 1 – Theory and Exam only.

A classroom setting at The Crown Plaza, Canberra at 5:00pm and finishing at 9:00pm. The course covers the theory content you need to pass the exam. You will be provided with a practical log book after successful course completion where an experienced skipper can help you complete the practical requirements for the Boat Licence. Once your log book is completed, you can then take your application form to Transport For NSW or Service NSW to obtain your licence

Option 2 – Theory, Exam and Practical Boat Training

A classroom setting at The Crown Plaza, Canberra, starting at 5:00pm and finishing at 9:00pm for the theory portion on the Friday Evening. The course covers the theory content you need to pass the exam. You will be provided with a time slot to have your practical completed with our professional trainers on our training vessel on Lake Burley Griffin on the Saturday. No practical log book required. You can then take your application form to Transport For NSW or Service NSW to obtain your licence.

First, The Boat Licence Theory

The theory component of the boat licence NSW course takes place in one of our waterfront classrooms. Never fear – even though it’s theory (and there are some serious safety aspects) our qualified trainers make it interesting and informative.

Then The Fun Part - Practical Boat Training

The practical component is the really fun part. Here you will board our 6.5m training boat and put everything that you’ve learned in the classroom into real-life practice. Out on the water you’ll get behind the helm and practise boat handling, navigating, mooring and more. It can be a little challenging if you’ve never driven a boat before, but don’t worry – our qualified instructors are friendly and patient and will make sure you get it right. That’s why you’re doing the course, after all!

Our trainers have many years experience in boating, and they really know all the tricks of the trade. We’ve had experienced boaties come along and do the course to support their kids or partners, and they’ve found that they’ve learned loads as well! This is a great way to upgrade your navigation skills and knowledge of current regulations, especially if you’ve had your boat licence for a while.

Then The Boat Licence Test Itself

Upon course registration you will receive a confirmation email that contains links to the boating hand book and boat practice quizzes. It is highly recommended you read and try some practice quizzes as they are the types of questions you will get on the day. Below you will find these links for your perusal.

Once you’ve mastered the basics on the boat, you’ll return to the classroom for the NSW General Boat Licence Test which features 50 multiple choice questions. If you’ve studied the course resource material provided  notes and listened to the trainers (and we’ve done our job well!) you will hopefully pass first go.

Need To Try Again? No Worries

If you don’t get the test first go, don’t worry. We will go through the questions that you missed so that you are confident you know them well, and you can attempt the test again. If you don’t get the test the second time around, you are welcome to take it again at our next course, free of charge.

Passed The Test? Now You’re Ready To Get Your Licence

NSW Boating Licences are only available from the Maritime and Roads Service, so you will still have to go into their offices to arrange that. But you will have everything you need to make that part of the process quick and easy. And you’ll have had a great day out on the water as well!

Add On Your PWC Licence Training Too

To get a PWC Licence, the General Boat Licence test must be passed first. You can do both courses on the 1 day with MTS. If you already have your boat licence you can do the PWC licence as a simple upgrade. You then have to get your PWC licence from the Roads and Maritime Services office or Service NSW, just like a boat licence.

Personal Watercrafts (PWCs) or jet skis require a licence no matter what the speed, and you must have passed the general boating test before you can apply for a Personal Watercraft Licence. Training for the PWC Licence is also available through the Maritime Training School and you can easily add it on to your Boat Licence training on the same day. The PWC course is theory only and there is no practical component. Upon registration you will receive a confirmation email that contains links to the PWC hand book and practice quizzes. It is highly recommended you read and try some practice quizzes as they are the types of questions you will get on the day. Below you will find these links for your perusal.The course takes approximately one hour to complete, and the exam has 15 multiple choice questions. Get it all done on the one day, and save time and hassle!Please note that the RMS cost of the PWC licence is approximately $180 per year. Not cheap!, Please reconsider booking for PWC licence if you are not planning to be an avid PWC rider.

Personal Watercraft (PWC) Licence (Upgrade From Boat Licence)

To get a PWC Licence, the General Boat Licence test must be passed first. You can do both courses on the 1 day with MTS. If you already have your boat licence you can do the PWC licence as a simple upgrade. You then have to get your PWC licence from the Transport for NSW office or Service NSW, just like a boat licence.

The upgrade consists of a short theory course followed by a 15 questionnaire exam online. You can also complete the course in the 1 day of you choose to do a boat and PWC licence on the same day.

If you’ve ever been on holidays down or up the coast and thought that taking out a jetski looks like fun, you might be surprised to discover that you can’t just hop on – not unless you have a licence. That’s right. In NSW, a special licence is required to ride a personal watercraft (PWC) regardless of what speed it is driven. You can’t just go and get a PWC licence at your local fishing shop or service station either!

The practical component is held on our 6.5 metre training boat where you’ll do all the practical exercises required for your licence (on Sydney Harbour for the Mosman course, Botany Bay area for the Sans Souci course). Then it’s back to the classroom for the NSW General Boat Licence Test – a 50-question multiple choice test.

Once you’ve successfully passed the test you’ll have a completed application form to take to the Roads and Maritime Services office where your licence will be issued.
